Welcome to EarthandSoulArt.com by Alicia Karr

Alicia Karr Welcome to my Website!
Please let your eyes and heart rest and enjoy these images. They are a gathering of my paintings made from scenes that have inspired me. Perhaps you have some images of your own that you would like to keep? I would be honored to recreate them in oil if you find yourself connecting to what you see here and what I have to say. I work from life and photos. I paint all things loved - by me, by you, and by the earth. Come take a look, enjoy, and continue observing all that life shows us.

Greetings,

Dreary gray, day after day, characterizes this time of year in the otherwise beautiful Main Line. But the flowering Snow Drops that are blooming are a reminder that nothing is permanent and in the midst of gray can be found beauty! I have to confess that I am detrimentally effected by lack of sun. Like a solar panel, I am energized by the light, the bright wash of colors that the sun brings ... so thank goodness for my January return trip to San Miguel de Allende (see my "Outside My Room - Casa Luna, San Miguel").

"Outside My Room - Casa Luna, San Miguel"

San Miguel, as usual, did not let me down. The Mexican culture is vibrant with color and the almost constant sun there imbues everything with a glow. Casa Luna Bed and Breakfast itself presents many wonderful focal points to paint (the Proprietress, Dianne Kushner, has an amazing artistic sensibility which is reflected in every nook and cranny of the inn ...) And the always blooming cascades of climbing floral vines coupled with the colors of the buildings, sky and sun in San Miguel, present a palette that Wolf Kahn and other colorists would be proud of ...

Having been rejuvenated by the sun and warmth and salsa dancing, I was able to start a productive roll upon my return. Hence the finish of a painting from my Italy series ("Portello del Giordino" - Door to the garden). And the best is that I have many more ideas for future paintings based on what I took in on these trips! (And here my thanks to Francine Shore who makes them possible and inspiring!)"Outside My Room - Casa Luna, San Miguel"

Finally, my more soulful side is getting fulfilled with the encountering of a wonderful opportunity — teach an art class to senior citizens who have a keen interest it. This will be pro bono work, which I believe we all should do to give back to those less fortunate. What do you have that you can share for the good of others by volunteer work? The rewards are far greater than anything monetary!

So to all of you out there in cyberspace, blessings and peace, to you and all beings in the world!

Ciao my friends and followers,

I have just returned from my many travels... The latest to Italy! I was so over stimulated by the extent of the visual aesthetics both new and old, that I could hardly sleep. Rome is hands-down the most beautiful city I have ever seen because of the extent of antiquities and art. It is simply overwhelming! I have brought back two paintings I started over there. I will follow this news note with photos as soon as I can catch my breath and sleep!

Greetings friends and website followers,

I have just returned from another painting expedition, this time to Provincetown, Cape Cod, Massachusetts. Provincetown is an artists community at the tip of the Cape and has a long history of art, having been summer home to contemporary American art greats such as Hans Hoffman and Wolf Kahn. It is picturesque in the typical New England fishing village-gone-touristy way, with lovely old "Cape Cod" clapboard homes with beautifully tended gardens. The beach is miles of bay on one side punctuated with views of boats and a lifehouse. On the other side of town are the dunes and undeveloped ocean beaches, where I was lucky enough to spot a seal.

Although the weather was cold and grey for most of my visit, this became an artistic asset. I was forced to find color in the most subtle nuances of the varying greys, challenging my creativity and eye. The results are on display in the following gallery pages. Additionally you will see a painting of a young girl amidst flowers ( a portrait in landscape). I still love painting figures/portraits and this painting indulged that desire. I hope you enjoy these new additions. And please sign the "guest book" so I know you were there!

Alica at Gallery Showing

Finally, the show that I am in at the Commerce Square Buildings through the Philadelphia Museum of Art runs through the beginning of August. The hours are 7am-7pm Mon.-Friday at 29th and 30th on Market. My work is in each of the two buildings so be sure to see them both! And starting August 3 with a "First Friday" Opening of August 5, some of my print work will be on display as part of the "Collaborative/32" show at the "3rd St. Gallery" that is actually on 2nd Street. Normal hours are noon to 5pm Wed.-Sundays. This show will run for one month and is a group show for some 31 of my colleagues and myself. Work will be displayed in many mediums so come and enjoy it! I will try and be there myself on the 5th.

Take care, and peace to you all.

Dear Friends and Collectors,

It is with great pleasure that I am informing you that my work is currently on exhibit in a show being put on by the Philadelphia Museum of Art.The show and is an annual event, with approximately 40 works of art on view. I was personally invited  to submit my work (an exceptional honor!) and all 8 of the paintings I submitted were taken.

The show is located in the two block long lobby of the Commerce Square twin office buildings on the north side of Market St. at 20th and 21st St. in Philadelphia. The viewing hours are 7am-7pm weekdays. The show runs until August.

I am awed and humbled by this honor and feel exceptionably fortunate for this opportunity to share my work! Thank you all for your continuing support and I do hope you will attend this show and maybe even purchase some art (naturally mine would be a good choice!) And if you do go, either drop me a line at "alicia@earthandsoulart.com" or sign my on-line guest book with your comments.

Who says summer is slow in Philly? Starting August 3, I will also be in a group show at the 3rd Street Gallery (which is really on 4th street!).  This is a lovely space though it is smaller in size than Commerce Square! The show will feature 32 artists all of whom have been recently working with Francine Shore (my mentor) and will include mixed media, prints and collages as well as paintings. I will probably be showing my mixed media/collages works there as I don't have any currently showing. The opening reception for that show will be  on "first Friday" August 5 from  5-9pm. I hope to see you there! Blessings to you all, be happy and well.
